What is a hashtag generator?

A hashtag generator is a tool that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to come up with hashtags that are relevant to a specific social media post and social network. All you have to do is share your content idea and a bit of info and it will provide you with a list of hashtags that you can use to enhance your social media messaging.

Our web-based hashtag generator is unique because it’s designed to provide hashtags for every social media network. You can use it as a hashtag idea generator for Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest, YouTube, LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook. Simply copy and paste your favorite hashtags at the end of your social media post. Boom. Viral mode activated.

How does this hashtag generator work?

Our hashtag creator is powered by ChatGPT, a natural language processing tool that’s designed to generate human-like responses depending on a user’s prompt. We’ve already set it up with a built-in prompt that works with the help of your input (the social network where you plan to post and a description of your content). Then it drums up a quick list of hashtags that are hyper-relevant to your post, industry, and niche.

Not unlike us humans, ChatGPT gets its knowledge from reading tons of diverse texts across the internet, including millions of social media posts. That means it has a huge library of information at its fingertips (er, do robots have fingertips?) and can produce thoughtful, conversational responses to basically any prompt you can dream up.

That’s why we use ChatGPT as the driving engine behind so many of our free social media tools, including our hashtag, username, and caption generators.

How to use this hashtag generator

You already know that hashtags are like turbochargers for your social media content. Strap ‘em on and watch your posts leave the competition in the dust. It’s that easy, right? Not exactly. The truth is that you need to be strategic about what you post and when. It all starts with coming up with the right hashtags for every post. Luckily, our free hashtag maker can take the task off your plate. Here’s how to use it to get the best hashtags for your content in a matter of seconds.

Step 1: Select your network

The hashtag generator can only work its magic if it knows where your content will live. Step one is to select your network from the dropdown menu. This tool will instantly generate caption ideas for TikTok, Instagram, Pinterest, YouTube, LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook

Step 2: Describe your image or video

This is where the magic really starts to happen. Tell the tool a bit about the content you plan to post. Be as descriptive as possible, but don’t overthink it! Adding a few descriptive words is usually enough to provide the tool with the information it needs.

A brief description is critical to helping it determine how to categorize your content — where it should live, the types of users who will like it, and what other hashtags are relevant.

Step 3: Add your keywords

Lastly, add a few keywords for context and to give the tool a better idea of what your post will be about. Keywords help the hashtag generator scour the web for relevant clues from existing social media feeds, ensuring that it provides the most powerful hashtags possible.

Hashtag best practices: 5 tips

Hashtags are a great way to help a social network categorize your post by topic so the right people see it at the right time. They also help ensure that your content shows up in search or on the explore page. But you need to know the best practices for using them properly before you go hashtagging willy-nilly (or else you might upset the all-mighty algo — yikes).

1. Don’t use too many hashtags

Resist the urge to cram your post to the brim with hashtags. Unfortunately, too many can make a post look spammy and might set off a user’s red flags. Plus, the algorithm could read it as spam or have trouble properly categorizing it. So how many hashtags should you use, exactly? We ran some experiments and found the following works best for most accounts:

  • Instagram: 3 to 5

  • Facebook: 2 to 3

  • Twitter: 1 to 2

  • TikTok: 3 to 5

  • LinkedIn: 1 to 5

  • Pinterest: 2 to 5

  • YouTube: 3 to 5

2. Get specific and serve your niche

Specificity is the most important facet of a well-designed hashtag strategy. That’s because if you’re not choosing tags that are hyper-relevant to your niche, you wind up competing with millions and millions of posts vying for the same audience’s attention.

On the other hand, if you choose hashtags that suit your specific corner of the internet and are relevant to what your target audience wants to see, you’re much more likely to show up at the top of their search results or explore page.

So, for example, rather than tagging your real estate content with, simply, #RealEstate or #HouseGoals, consider tagging #(YourCity)RealEstate or the style of architecture or home decor style showcased in the post.

3. Don’t forget the captions and alt text

Yes, your hashtags are critical to helping the social network understand what your post is about — and, in turn, showing it to the right audience — but they’re not the only thing to consider. You also need to make sure you’re optimizing your captions and including alt text in your posts so that the algorithm understands exactly what your post is about. (Don’t worry, our social media caption generator will write the captions for you).

4. Determine (and stick to) your preferred case style

Uppercase? Lowercase? Camel case? It doesn’t really matter*, as long as you stay consistent across your posts. If you’re a brand or a creator with a team, we recommend adding your hashtag case preference to your social media style guide so that everyone who posts on your behalf uses the same style.

*Camel case is recommended by the Bureau of Internet Accessibility because it makes hashtags easier to read.

5. Make them short and easy to remember

Lastly, regardless of platform, it’s always best to keep your hashtags short and sweet. This ensures that they’re easy for users to read and easy for you to remember so you can keep referring back to them post after post. Short hashtags are also friendlier to those with dyslexia or cognitive disabilities, so they make your posts more accessible.
